Northern Michigan In May

This week has had some very unique weather. It all started last Sunday in the fog and light rain. The rain became heavier as the week progressed. By Wednesday morning the fog was dense and I had to drive to Gaylord. How dense was the fog? Visibility was down to about 100 feet. When I got to the top of a hill, I had to back my speed down to 30mph just to be able to see if there were any cars … Continued

Fog Dancin

At 6:30 a.m. I got up and looked out the window to see what kind of day was in store for us. It was cloudy, but the Mighty Mac was still visible. I made a cup of tea and turned around and noticed that a fog bank was making it’s way toward the bridge. Within minutes the bridge was gone. I couldn’t see one inch of the huge structure . As I stood in the window watching, the fog moved rapidly away and … Continued

Mirror Mirror On The Straits

Yesterday evening the view of the straits was breath taking. All day the waters were calm and by the evening, the waters of the straits reflected the lighted bridge from tower to bottom. It was an amazing sight. I started taking pictures around 8:00 p.m. and finally stopped around midnight.

Up North Frame Of Mind

For the last two days, I’ve had a hard time keeping my mind on my work because of the view from my window. I am busy with spring cleaning, painting and wallpapering. But I find my eyes wandering outside. It is a gorgeous, blue sky, sunny day.  While I was wallpapering, I heard the northern flicker woodpecker singing and then pecking ferociously on the tree next to our office. I snuck out and snapped some pictures of him in action. He … Continued

Yesterday evening I went for a sunset walk along the shore. It was chilly with a northwest wind so I bundled up and headed out. I walked on the sidewalk that skirts the shoreline heading into the beautiful sunset. I walked under the bridge and stopped next to the waters edge and held perfectly still. I drank in the beauty and serenity of  the straits. The water was a very soft, powder blue and the reddish rays of sunset bathed everything in … Continued

We Are HERE!

When we left our home , it was a sunny, blue sky kind of day. The drive north was uneventful with the exception of an unexpected I-75 closure. We navigated around this and continued north. The landscape was brown and barren looking. It was indefinite need of some color. We did find some color just north of West Branch…in the form of , yep you guessed it, SNOW. the white stuff was scattered beneath the barren trees. As we were … Continued

In the previous blog titled We Survived !, I told you about Fort Fright. I mentioned that finally I was able to take a picture of the female ghost that walks around the fort . But I forgot to post it for you to see. So I’m doing so right now. Also, I was attempting to take a picture of the bridge towers peaking above the fort walls, when I was visited by the werewolf. Yep, it was the moment I screamed.

We Survived!

Yes, we have survived another adventure at Fort Fright. On Saturday evening, the winds were howling and so were the werewolves.  These furry creatures s-c-a-r-e-d me twice. Due to the lack of electricity in the fort, these creatures are camouflaged by the heavy cloak of darkness within the fort walls. The only source of light comes from the lanterns hanging along the paths…if you dare to venture in. So when the fort doors were opened by two skeleton soldiers, I walked in … Continued

The Winds of September

Yesterday I was looking for my cement shoes. Yes, I needed them just to walk outside in the 40-50 mph winds. The howling northwest winds churned up the waters of the straits and sent waves crashing ashore for most of the day. Ferry boats from Mackinaw City to the island were cancelled and traffic on the Mighty Mac was closed to all vehicles except cars, vans and empty pick up trucks. There were big rigs, vehicles pulling campers/trailers and vehicles … Continued

New Neighbors

I noticed them earlier in the week. Yesterday morning, they were very busy flying around. They are blue jays. Not just a couple. Oh no. I counted about 20, all male blue jays. They are beautiful birds .I tried to take several pictures, but they appeared to be camera shy. Some turned their backs on the camera, while others took off. They are temporarily nesting in the large oak tree next to our back parking lot. While I was trying to take … Continued
