About the Owners & Motel History
The Riviera Motel has a rich history of providing generations of families with comfortable accommodations and an unforgettable experience during their stay in Mackinaw City. The evolution of the property dates back to the nineteenth century when the property was home to a singular, modest cottage called the Rudy Cottage. It was built by a doctor and his wife from Romulus, MI in the 1880s and sat where the pool is currently located.
The property was sold to two sisters in the late 1950s who opened the Riviera Motel in May of 1963. It was the premier place to stay in the 1960s and 1970s because it had all the latest amenities that many hotels and motels in the area did not including television and private bathrooms for every room! At that time, the motel was missing the pool, did not have a paved parking lot and the second story of the lake view wing was not yet built. The photo to the left is the motel’s first postcard.
In the mid-1970s, the second owner improved the motel by adding the pool, the second floor lake view wing, a laundry room, the lobby, on-site living quarters and paved the parking lot.
After the third owners managed it for approximately 17 years, they retired and sold it to us, Marietta and Lynn Devantier. We took ownership on April 1, 1999 and have made several improvements to the interior and exterior of the motel. We always make sure that every guest has a pleasant stay with us and work to provide personal touches that others in the area may not be able to offer. Check out our amenities to learn more!
